Default outside orchids and too much rain

I had a variety of orchids outside on a baker's rack on the deck and they were growing beautifully, then the rain hit for several days. I have several plants that the new growth is black and the leaves are turning black also. I will check the roots but should I cut off all the black that I see or leave it be.
It makes me sick to look at all the damage that I ended up with.
Any suggestions???

Erwinia bacteria infestation? is the roots turning into mushy watery globs? Pictures might be nice...
cut all the affected leaves and spray physan 20(one capful to a gallon) and repot...make sure to clean the roots well and put fresh media...the old media might harbor the bacteria and will affect the indoor plants

I think that you will be advised to remove the black stuff because rot seems to be one of those things that spread. I have used alcohol on the leaves to stop rotting when I was very desperate (it was a very fast moving rot) but you might want to find a good fungicide, something that can also be used on the roots if the need arises. Moving the orchids inside and putting a strong fan on them, keeping them warm and dry is also very helpful to prevent further trouble. You don't want to leave bark or sphrag stay too wet if your temperatures are on the cool side because an orchid can rot surprisingly quickly.
Good luck, hope all the orchids are okay,
Leafmite

It sounds like crown rot to me. And if it has gone down into the crown, there isn't much you can do but try to clean it out, getting rid of all the necrotic material. Then irrigate with peroxide and/or SA-20/Physan-20 and sprinkle with cinnamon. If you get lucky, and the plant survives, you may get a basal keiki. If not so lucky might as well pitch it because once the primordial tissue is dead, nothing will grow from the crown. Black as you mention is probably not Erwinia. Erwinia looks like the pictures I posted in my thread, http://www.orchidboard.com/community...-my-phals.html. Pray you don't have Erwinia!!!!! Not that crown rot is nice to have.

Thanks for the good information, it looks like I'll be busy repotting. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
