Phalaenopsis mannii seedling care? Male
Default Phalaenopsis mannii seedling care?

I acquired a little Phalaenopsis mannii and I was wondering if there was anything that I should do differently as compared to a mature plant. It is in a 2 inch square plastic pot containing bark medium.
Naturally this doesn't have the moisture retention that a larger pot would have and I'm wondering if seedlings prefer to be damper or dryer than their parents, or if they like it the same? The same question applies to fertilizing.

Lastly, I've done some quick looking, but haven't turned up much one the boards on my own, I was wondering if manniis deviate in any significant way in their needs from generic Phal care.

Thanks in advance.

I am relatively new to this myself and got ten small phalaenopsis seedlings for couple months. I think with seedlings it is important to not let them stay dry for too long (nor should they be always wet). I used to have them in CHC but recently moved all the seedlings into sphagnum moss in tiny clear plastic pots and like it better because with moss it is easier to see when it dried out and it probably keeps better humidity around the plant.
I do not use any fertilizer on seedlings and would like to know about it too.
I am not sure about manii special requirements.

Just follow the phal culture. If it is already established in the pot, then it is thriving and growing. Worrying and fussing with it is not going to let it grow any faster. Let it be.

Ok, so after some more digging, it looks like the only difference in seedling care is that they like it a little warmer and just slightly wetter. I haven't seen anything about fertilizing any more or less, so I'll prob just get this little guy on the weekly weakly regiment and because of the pot size I'll probably be watering 2x per week.

Thanks for looking, please let me know if anyone has any other information or suggestions.

Yes seedlings need a bit warmer temps and the media needs to stay moist. I'm not sure I would fertilize weekly, it may be too much for small seedlings.

Phalaenopsis mannii seedling care? Male
Default 1 year later

So my little mannii is still doing quite well, I transferred it to SH a while back and it seemed to like that, before the previous leaf would mature, it would start pushing up a new one. However, in the interest of space and because I've learned that this species likes a dry period in the winter, I've transferred it to a mount. It's only been a month, but it seems to still be doing well.

My question is for the winter "dry" period, how dry is dry? I’ve been looking around at other culture sheets and forums, but they all seem sort of vague. I manage to maintain around 50% humidity, but should I be watering this once a week, once a month? My other mounted plants get water about every other day.

Is there a way to tell if the plant is getting too dry without waiting for the leaves to begin to prune up? It’s still a relatively small plant, so I’d rather not stress it any more than I already have. On that note, assuming the culture is good, what is the minimum size that I could expect to see a bloom on this plant? It currently has a leaf span of about 5 inches.
