For a State of Hawaii certified nursery, it is simple to ship to all other states, except Arizona. Nurseries need to pack & tape closed the shipping box or parcel. Then a certified nursery stamp is applied by the nursery, to the sealing tape & the parcel is mailed or shipped. A certified nursery can ship easily & quickly.

The state of Hawaii has a comprehensive nursery certification system that is based on the very restrictive orchid plant entry requirements of the state of California. In order to be certified for export to the US mainland, nurseries must grow plants on benches at least 18" off the ground, in clean pots & fresh non-soil media. All certified plants must be physically separated from non-certified plants.

In addition, plants must be sprayed on a regular basis with approved chemicals to assure that plants are free of insects & other pests. Weeds must be controlled or eradicated in & around greenhouses & shadehouses. The State of Hawaii Dept of Agriculture also conducts regular nursery inspections & requires monthly inventory reports to insure compliance with certification requirements.

Some visitors to Hawaii purchase plants from uncertified nurseries & take them to the agricultural inspectors at the airport for visual inspections. However, for certain states, this visual inspection does not suffice for non-certified plants.

This may sound like a lot of extra effort for a certified nursery. However, our nursery simply grows all of our plants following these strict requirements & in doing so we have a head start in growing clean, disease free plants. Of course, our nursery's cultural practices also affect the overall quality of plants.

The reason for the reluctance of many nurseries to ship to Arizona is that the state of Arizona also requires the additional step of having a state agricultural official witness the spraying of insecticide for each specific shipment. It sounds like this is required for shipments from other states also.

Arizona dont mind illegal aliens...they just dont want Mexican origin...I see a lot of Eastern Europeans and Asians who cant speak English just as the newly migrated Mexicans do...I dont see them frisked and mauled by the on the spot check point after 10PM in Tucson (I was there to witness this Jan/Feb 2011) I am a blue eyed blond New Englander WASP with a Boston accent...so I was not at all suspect. In fact I was blue blood to them. I was immediately allowed to go.
Its not about agricultural blight pandemic scare...its just fear due to ignorance. Laws have already been in effect in other states giving criteria and guidelines on safe transport of agricultural products and plants...I dont know why Hawaii and Arizona are still in the dark ages...

its true, though, that plants have to be put through those methods to get here. But places like kawamoto and carmela said theyd ship to az so im assuming theyre top notch. the first thing i ask ANY vendor befor epurchasing anything is do you ship to az. its mainly a preventative measure to keep any pests from destroying the natives. as for the illegal issue, my friend is canadian AND illegal but since shes fair skinned she wasnt questioned but some of my other friends were.

Individual states have their own requirements regarding plants entering their boundries. Some are very strict, (CA, AZ, HI), others are very lenient. I know that here in FL, most plants are okay to have shipped in, but NOT citrus plants or any kind with out lots of paperwork and expense.

I ordered a Paph. Pinocchio from Kalapana Tropicals. I placed the order and several days later it was at my door, in great condition. That was all there was to it.

Hawaii is not the one in the dark ages. If you go back and re-read catwalker's post you will see that the reason they go to such great lengths is because the state of California requires it. I would guess that is where 90% of their mainland shipments go. I was told by a Hawaiian grower that part of the reason for California's strictness is to protect their own orchid growers by making it more difficult to ship orchids in from out of state.
