Default Brassavola nodosa with no fragrance

Can anyone tell me why my Brassavola nodosa has no fragrance? Is there something I should be doing culturally? Or are some of them without fragrance for some reason?

Thanks,

KC

try early in the morning or at dusk...it is where you can catch some fragrance on some flowers...sometimes you need to put your nostrills near the flower to get a whiff

Mine isnt fragrant until full dark, and as the night progresses, it gets stronger and stronger, but as soon as it gets near dawn, it stops all together.

I recently bought a hoya "Ruby Sue" that has fragrance if you stick your nose right in the flower. But, when dusk sets in it starts to permeate the whole house. Almost to the point of overwhelming.

I grew a Cestrum nocturnum from seed in a pot and now it is blooming. Only fragrant at night - but so amazing and so strong. Usually white flowers or inconspicuous flowers are fragrant only at night.
maybe put the pot close to your bed and check at night.

Since it is pollinated by a nocturnal moth it only scents when it is dark and warm. I can remember last year taking mine to the local OS meeting and driving home in the dark with the heat on and the scent filled the car. Sneak up on it in the dark and you will have no problem detecting it's scent.

I've noticed something with fragrant orchids which is not always talked about. That is that if the orchid is on the dry side it will not be fragrant even when it's meant to be.

I have no experience with this orchid, but I've noticed it on both Oncidium Alliance orchids and on Phals.

depends on how long the bloom has been open as well. if its recently open, give it some time.

What some of the others had said about Brassavola nodosa is true.

1. It is highly fragrant at night. The fragrance can be smelled from across a porch and even then it is still very distinct and strong!

2. The fragrance is very faint to non-existent during the day.

3. Strength of fragrance does depend on age of the flower (not the plant).

4. They are moth pollinated and thus that is why they are fragrant at night.

5. Moisture does affect fragrance.

I will add this...

6. Each individual flower (not plant), can produce their fragrances at slightly different strengths from one another.
