Default What are these?

I'm hoping someone here could tell me what these growths are on my Maudiae. It is my first paph and I thought at first they were the start of roots, but I think that 2 of them maybe roots and the green ones are the start of 2 new plants? There is 1 of each on both sides of the base of my slipper. I hope that I am right. Thanks for the help

I'm not sure if those are roots or new growth
Paphs are sympodial - new growth comes from rhizome, like Dens, Catts, Onc, Cyms. I only have a very few Paphs, and new fans are usually recognizable as such, so my guess is those are roots, but I can't say for certain- I'm sure someone else will be able to say more definitively. If they are roots, you may want to pot this plant a bit deeper.

I don't grow paphs, but do know that there roots tend to be brownish. So I'm tempted to say that in the second pic the middle nubbin is a root while the 2 green ones are growth. But don't take my word for it, I could be way off the mark!

Yippee!!!! I am used to having phals and their roots are green, but when I re-potted my paph I noticed the roots were brown and I thougt geeze I hope they're not rotten, but they were firm. Not alot of them....so I am sooo happy 2 new roots growing and 2 new fans.

One quick question will they continue to grow (the fans) as it is starting to turn to fall here or do they go dormant and start growing again in spring?

Thanks again!!!

They shouldn't slow down aslong as you give them proper water and warmth. The fans should just keep trucking

You do indeed have 2 new fans coming. Maudiae type Paphs grow all year, no rest period. They can start new growths at least twice a year if they are happy, at any time of year. On a mature plant each new fan will bloom as it reaches full size. A plant like yours that will start 2 fans at once can quickly fill a pot and have several flowers at once.

Also paphs usually do not grow and tend to aerial roots that I know of. They pop up out of the soil at times but they die off rather quickly from my observation. I have seen some travel parallel to the soil but thats not aerial.

RJ - You are mostly correct about Paphs and aerial roots. Paphs will not develop aerial roots the way that monopodial orchids do but they will put out roots above the first set of leaves. If those roots don't break through the leaves and find their way into the moist environment of the medium, they will stop growing. Their are also Paphs that I call climbers, in that the new growth grows higher than the growth before, when this happens, again if the rots don't make it down into the medium, they stop growing. I can post some pictures as examples in the morning if you would like to see what I am talking about.
