Glad I found out before I reordered a replacement! Thanks!

So where did you find the information on the parentage of my particular orchid? I'm going to have to search now for my other two, being Zieglar's Love (Pixie Lavender x Falcon Sunrise) and Beth Cox (Avalon Pellegrini x Pixie Shadow). I hope I haven't goofed and gotten more cooler growing masdie's.

As others have stated, I'd really rather not be in the Masdie Killer Club if I can at all help it. My poor little Masdie in my care will never forgive me, lol...

what you can keep in mind is that while the plants require cooler temps, that is offset by much higher light and lots of fresh air needing movement to master the cooler growing plants. Very bright light even. The light provides an aura of warmth around the plant that along wirth the air dries out any excess water that lies on top of the leaves.

If you keep it cool and dont give them the light and air then the plants root system cant use what you are trying to give it as it is out of order. Masdys dont like to be surrounded by dank stale air. The roots like to be wet but you have to give them the air and light to use what you are providing them with... Its a fine balancing act between use of resources and rejection. If you arent giving them the light and air keep them on the drier side. They will grow but slowly. Better than dying rapidly hey?

try some fishbowls..

There are plenty of warmer growing Masdevallias, don't have to bother with plants you can't grow.

Try Masdevallia nidifica. Tough little guys tolerate heat very well. Grows like weeds.

I grow under lights. I have a fan going 24/7. My masdies are nearest to the fan. They are all in clay pots with sphag. I use worm tea.

Paul - Here is a list of the species that make up your two crosses and the normal average day/night temps that they grow in insitu.

Zieglar's Love
31% coccinea 56-58 45-47
25% decumana 67-70 48-52
25% ignea 56-58 45-47
13% veitchiana 80-83 56-57
6% estradae 71-75 49-52

Beth Cox
25% schroederiana 64-69 47-51
25% triangularis 75-79 59
25% infracta 77-79 57
13% veitchiana 80-83 56-57
12% chaparensis 74-77 53-54

I hope this helps to give you a better idea as to how to grow them.

In answer to your first question, the lineage info comes from OrchidWiz and the cultural stuff comes from the Baker's culture sheets.

I love the Baker's website and use it regularly, my issue has been knowing where to find lineage information. But WOW, 295 for a subscription?! If that's more or less a lifetime dollar amount you pay, then I might splurge and do it.

Thank you for the information Glen! That will be very helpful in the future should anything go south with the other two.

I will be looking to replace my dying Masdie with one that is not a cool grower this time. I had guessed that the growers had given it more warm growing parentage, but apparently I was very wrong about that on all 3 counts.
