No. Over time, a vandaceous plant will form roots all along its "stem". If you "top" one, and the top has roots, you can grow it as a new, smaller plant. Quite often, the "base" will sprout side growths, and can be continued-on as its own plant.
Vandaceous plants are climbing, vining plants, although some have more of a tendency (arachnis and renanthera), and others less (ascocentrum).
