Encyclia coachleata, flowering from the same bulb, twice?
Default Encyclia coachleata, flowering from the same bulb, twice?

Hi, I got myself a very fine Encyclia coachleata a week ago. 6 fat bulbs, and everyone have been in flower (i think), there are dried out spike residue between the leafs.

The question: Can the Encyclia coachleata flower more then once / per bulb? Or do I need to wait for a new bulb to mature to get flowers again?

Have a nice day everyone who reads this!

Normally yes, you will need to wait for a new pseudobulb to grow and mature. For a vigorous Prosthechea (Encyclia) cochleata this can be twice a year, even more.

However, this species can very rarely be an exception to that rule. It is possible to get a keiki or a second spike from the base of an old spike, but don't count on it. Let me emphasize... VERY rarely, and maybe never for some clones.

Thanks!

Will the old bulbs die?

Eventually, but normally not for several years at least. As long as they are green and healthy they provide water and nutrients and energy to support new growth.
