I know iron (III) phosphate can be used, but I never heard of any form of iron oxide being used against slugs (except in the form of a rusty shovel). Are you sure it's iron oxide?
NB: iron (III) phosphate is not soluble in water. Sluggo is a mixture of iron phosphate with some other stuff; slugs are supposed to stop feeding and die a few days after munching on sluggo. I have no idea how it works, or whether iron phosphate gets dissolved in the process.
