Cymbidium and Dendro questions

There was just a forum that had almost my exact question, which was good. It was my cymbidiums get a good amount of sun from about 11-5 they get 85 degree at the most sun. They are a nice yellowish green color (not burned at all). My question is when is yellow too yellow for a cymbidium? Is there a point where i should move them into less sun for a few weeks?

Question 2: Do cymbidiums send out new flower stalks from old bulbs or the new growth thats coming in? Or both?

Question 3: I recently received a very large dendrobium from a buddy of mine and it was just about to open a few flowers. They opened and were really kind of.. not good looking.. lol. There is a ton of potential its like Yellow all around the outside and a purple/blue/violet color in the middle. Could the lack of color be from a fertilizing problem or a light problem? Or is it bad genetics?

To add.. the dendrobium had aphids so i seperated it from everything and gave it a good amount of aphid killer. From what i can see most of the aphids are dead. Could this add to the ugly flowers?

I think so long as the cyms aren't burning - they're good
I believe cyms only bloom from new growth

I'm not positive, but I would bet that pesticide could contibute to ugly blooms - as for the color, it's possible to vary with temps - not sure about insufficient fertilizer, but seems it could be possible - I'm sure someone will be able to answer more definitively

1. If it ain't burnin', it ain't hurtin'. Leave them be.

2. The answer to this question might be dependent on the type of Cymbidium in question, idk.

Other than the above answer, I don't recall whether my NOID Cymbidium hybrids bloomed from old or new growths.

3. Can you provide a photo of the "ugly" Dendrobium flowers? Ugly is a relative term. Just to illustrate my point; what you call "ugly", I may find "fascinatingly, unusually beautiful".

In regards to the colors of the flowers, while I'd like to still see a pic of the flowers you speak of, I think I may have seen the type of Dendrobium you're talking about. Unfortunately w/o a photo, I'm just blindly guessing. There are actually a few Dendrobiums w/ flowers that match the color scheme you describe, be it species or hybrids.

As a general rule of thumb, Cymbidiums bloom from the newly matured pseudo-bulb. However, some lines of breeding have allowed plants to re-bloom on the past season's bulb for another season. Two seasons in a row on one bulb is great for development of a specimen plant.

As for the dendrobium, i'll get u a picture by tonight. You are right tho, maybe not "ugly" in a sense, but they look like they could have much greater potential.

I have a den that has light yellow green petals/sepals, but a purple throat. I think it is exqisite. perhaps yours is like that?
