Evergreen cane dendrobium question

Well our botanical garden just got another donation of orchids from the Thai Embassey to Canada. I'm not sure what we did to deserve this but this time they sent 27 Vandaceous orchids and 10 Dendrobiums. This time there are some Vascostylis and Rhynchostylis X Ascocenda crosses...looking forward to those!

My question; the 10 dendrobiums all appear to be evergreen cane-types. They were mounted which is not so bad for the small types but some are nearly 3 feet tall! Can they be potted like 'regular' orchids...I've never grown this type. I have D. kingianum growing in a pot and my only nobile type is mounted. If they can be potted, would a medium bark/perlite/charcoal mix (say for Odonts) be OK?

Yes evergreens can certainly be potted, and a basic mix will serve just fine. I am concerned however about the damage that may be caused by un-mounting them, as it sounds like they are quite well established on the mounts.

They are mounted in a coconut husk which is becoming quite rotted...seperating them from it should not pose a problem.

eek! Sounds like a nice little project, Todd.
Some of my dens (larger ones) are grown in bark,rok & charcol. They root up real nicely in this. Drainage and high light is the key with these shifty dends.
