Hi there OB,

I've been wanting to sort out a humidity tray for some time for my orchids, until i get bigger amount of smooth stones to make one would these stones in a dish help for now or does it need to be a bigger quantity to cover the whole plant.

Well, it can't hurt. Maybe it will provide extra humidity for the pot (the parts directly over the dish), but these do nothing for ambient humidity. Also be careful not to leave so much water in the dish that it gets sucked up by the pot and rots the roots.
Things that work better
Crowding plants together (though not a good idea if you are worried about disease)
electronic humidifiers/foggers
spraying your plants at least once a day (but be careful not to overly wet the plant which would cause rot).
