Question How do I bounce back from fert salt buildup

The thread title says it all.

What steps should I take to stop the the buildup and minimize the damage that's been done?

I've repotted several of my phals this week but some of the other orchids (like the catts) are past the new stages of new growth so I hesitate to repot those until the next growing cycle. They're all growing but after closer inspection I see where some of the orchids have more build up than others and I've lots roots because of it. The phals seemed most sensitive.

I am stopping fertilizers for a while. (If I resume, I think I'll go with 2x a month during active growth at an extra dilute solution.)

I water with city water from the garden hose and the water is hard. I didn't fertilize at every watering and would give the plants plain tap water. Admittedly I didn't follow that regime in the very beginning. Still, I worry if the water quality will hinder the recovery. What signs of hard water sensitivity should I look for as I use plain water in the next month? Should I use distilled water 1-2x a month to minimize the effects of hard water?

We're currently in a dry spell so collecting rain is not an option.

Your help is very much appreciated.

For my 2 cents: I would just flush the pots more often. Along with fertilizer salts you probably also have mineral deposits from your water. I don't think I'd change the routine you have in watering and fertilizing, just flush the pots more often.

Thanks, Z.

I'm going to be more mindful from now on and see how it goes. These orchids keep teaching me something new.
