One grower I know who pots in bark tops her pots with a 1/2" NZ moss to help reduce watering/conserve moisture.

Depending on what it is that you are growing, you could try S/H or semi-hydro growing. First Rays Orchids has great information and supplies. I won't go back to bark and moss now that I use it. My plants seem to love it.

I have a few Phals, 2 Vanda families, lots of Oncidiums now <thanks julie!>... I'd have to check what else. But I am VERY tempted now by the S/H growing. I have seen S/H but felt dumb asking what it meant. I am so thrilled to find out what it means and to have browsed the site and found so much info that made me really want to change over! Wish I had the money to change over. Cause it sounds perfect for me...

If I can go back to the original query for a moment...
Bark mixes - especially fresh stuff - are particularly hard to wet, and rewet.
The thing to do isn't necessarily to add a more moisture-holding ingrediaent, although that can help, but to water very thoroughly, WAIT 30 minutes for the structures to swell a bit (opening more pores that can hold more moisture), the water thoroughly again.
Over time, all of the pores stay open, and it rewets easier.

I am curious about it and am off to your site........

Careful Oscarman. Ray's site made me want to switch over to S/H - and I just found it because of the posts here. I've been reading about S/H growing and had NO clue what it was and felt silly asking since so many people seemed to do it.... now that I know, I WANT to switch over.... wish I had a tax return on the way - or a winning lottery ticket LOL!!!!
I've been reading Ray's site all day long...

Whoa, that's a bit freaky - my tax return just came in the mail today. Sorry, not willing to share!

I posted a smarmy reply to this antagonistic response to me, but it didn't appear. Hrmph...
Well, it's my chance to look like the bigger person and say "Enjoy that tax return and post pics of the growing medium and beautiful flowers you buy"

It wasn't THAT antagonistic.
I hope you all get a chance to try S/H growing at some point in the near future. Though, it is not good for Vandaceous plants from what I have read.
