Orchid in vivarium?
Default Orchid in vivarium?

I am a total noob regarding orchid and even plants in general... I know a lot bout vivariums but the only thing I lack is plant knowledge!
So I am coming here because I am looking for some viv friendly orchid and orchid jewels!
I will be ordering from this websites
I am looking to buy one orchid jewel and one orchid. I need a small plant that will do good in 70-85F, 70-90% humidity.
Also, I am looking for orchid around 14-19$ since I am new and might very well kill it ;p
I had my eyes on Isochillus linearis and Dendrobium seidelianum.

I can mount them on driftwood in the viv, or plant them in the soil or in a coco fiber basket for extra drainage.

Tx in advance!

How large is your tank?

What is the lighting going to be like?

Isochilus linearis is generally considered a medium sized plant that gets to be about 1 ft to 14" (about 30 cm to 35 cm) tall, not including the roots. This orchid can be grown as an epiphyte (grows on trees in the wild), a terrestrial or a lithophyte (grows on rocks or rocky areas). I'm not sure how this plant would do in a vivarium type setting, because for me it grows just fine without having to be put in a vivarium. But I do know that if you're growing it as a terrestrial, the potting soil must drain well, and it should never be kept soggy. It likes indirect bright light.

Any of the listed species of Jewel Orchids are fine in a vivarium. Jewel Orchids are terrestrial orchids.

Dendrobium seidelianum is an obsolete name of the plant we currently call Dendrobium loddigesii.

Dendrobium loddigesii might not do too well in a vivarium setting. They have a seasonal pattern where they go dormant during the winters and need a bit of a dry spell during that time. It is one of the smaller Dendrobium species though. Keep in mind that this species is an epiphyte (it grows on trees in the wild).

Hexadesmia sessilis is an obsolete name for the orchid Scaphyglottis livida.

Scaphyglottis livida is a small to medium sized epiphyte (grows on trees in the wild), with a rambling habit. This is a small flowered orchid. It may do well in your vivarium depending on the amount of light you have available.

You may want to consider Capanemia uliginosa, Dryadella edwallii, Ionopsis paniculata, Leptotes tenuis, Leptotes unicolor, or Rodriguezia bahiensis.

I'm leaning towards the suggesting Leptotes tenuis or Leptotes unicolor, but keep in mind they like bright indirect light.

Another consideration is what is in your vivarium. Some animals are rougher on orchids (especially smaller varieties) than other animals. It's my understanding that gecko's and such are fairly hard on them but that frogs are actually great for orchids. So you may want to consider the fragility of the orchid you are picking in relation to the size and wandering habit of your animals.

Depending on where you are in canada phals may grow well in your Terrarium as well. I live in Moist maritime with south facing windows and the need a little extra but they are not in sphagnum moss at all Also check out paramount orchids too...they have a pretty good selection to that was recommended to me!

I have dual t8 6500k over all of my viv, I can arrange them directly or partially under lights.
Frogs will be in my vivariums.
Most of the viv are around 18 and 24 in various sizing (exo terras)
so flowers no higher than 8-10 inches are the best since i have false bottoms and very filled foliage!

What about these plants?
Pleurothallis grobyi - blooming, mounted
Barbosella handroi - very tiny leaves, mounted
Stelis drosophila - plant in crevices

THanks a lot for the advices!!

They're fine.

I recommend finding out how to mount them properly.

I also highly recommend using water that is low in dissolved minerals. RO/DI water is fine. Distilled water is fine. Rainwater is fine.

It is preferred to not use tap water.

There are smaller geckos that will not harm or damage orchids.

As long as neither frog or gecko is over 4" (10 cm) long they're all good!
