lol I love your excitement. I do the exact same with my orchids... stare at them every day, sometimes many times per day, hoping that there's something new. and when there is, oh the joy!! haha. Nice to see when others feel the same!! Congrats though, your orchid looks very happy and healthy!

Hahaha so I came home and the first thing after I put down my stuff was to go straight to the window and stare at my orchids - thinking "be a spike, not a root!"

Rosie, you're the Orchid Whisperer! You knew all the new mystery nubs (except for first) were roots! I kinda guessed the others except for the tiny nub #4 were roots. #4 was so small that I couldn't tell. So I peeked at the nubs to check on their progress. Now they are all miniature versions of the root nub. DOH!

RJSquirrel, that's so true! Although I went a little nuts this last time. I saw a cym in the supermarket around Easter so I avoided temptation by not going to the supermarket and making my husband do all the shopping until they were all gone. Meanwhile I went online and bought a giant cym and 2 dens.

thepurpleorange & peace: Thanks so much! I felt like such a complete n00b crouching over my orchids cheering them on. I think I creeped out my neighbors across the lawn, because they were outside on their deck and I'm crouched by my window looking at my orchids. I caught them giving me a funny look and going back inside. They must think I'm stalking them through my orchids. It probably didn't help that with all this new activity going on, I check a few times a day and even look just before bedtime with a flashlight.

help: I love looking at new growth too! Before all this action happened with my phal, I was just crouching by the window watching my den leaves come into place. I liked the dark purplish coloration. I couldn't help but think if I'm this excited about leaves, what's going to happen when I finally get a spike? I love that photo of you with "mega-phal!" Is it the way the photo is taken or is it really half the size of your head??? My jaw dropped when I saw that photo. Where did you get that?

Thanks for the support everyone!

haha, i get weird looks when i check on my orchids outside, the neighbors walking look weird at me! haha!

its just the angle of the picture. sadly! the blooms are 4 1/2-5" so they are up there, but not as big as they look.

actually, i got it at walmart! its blooms were fading and the cache pot was cracked so i got it cheap. becasue the cache was cracked, was the only reason it didnt meet a watery grave, all the ones without cracked pots were drowned! cost me $6 and i mounted it myself. love watching the roots on that guy!

LOL It'd probably be worse for me if I were outside. I do it from inside my own house so I'm probably known to them as "nosy neighbor."

Sorry to hear that it was only the camera angle. 4.5" is still pretty big! Congratulations for getting it at a low price! I still would like to believe that somewhere out there, maybe one day if I'm lucky, I'll come to find a phal with a bloom half the size of my head. It seems everytime I ask someone where they get some amazing orchid, the answer is always "the supermarket" or "Walmart." Why don't I have these by me? I have the drowning or dead ones by me.

yeah, i was a bit dissapointed this blooming, but it was weird this time. it had one bloom on the main spike and then an auxiliary spike. so that could be why they are smaller. and i dont have a greenhouse with a perfect conditions. i think i heard somewhere that some mass producing nurseries dont let the spikes mature for a few seasons, to make the plant produce big once it is let spike fully. but idk

the rest of mine are smaller
