Phaius Growing Medium Male
Default Phaius Growing Medium

Last November I purchased a Phaius from an orchid wholesaler who once a month allowed the public to come to visit and purchase. The Phaius is in a small 7 cm (3 inch)container being encouraged by the seller that it would fit in satistfactorily with the growing conditions of my half a dozen Phalas.
It is in a moss medium. Is it conducive to being put in bark, which is what my Phalas are in?
When should I repot it to something bigger?
It had 2 nodes one of which has died.

Not a big surprise that the new growths on the Phaius died the way it's being grown currently!

Phaius are not bog plants. They are terrestrials, but they don't occur in bogs!

That's right, you read correctly, they are not epiphytes, they're terrestrial orchids.

You need to get them out of that Sphagnum fast!

I recommend using potting soil with lots of perlite or pumice. When I say lots of perlite or pumice, I mean it. The medium has got to retain moisture but have really good drainage.

2 parts perlite or pumice to 1 part potting soil will work.

I don't know what kind of Phaius you have, but some Phaius from Thailand are known to grow on limestone rocks with some organic debris.

Well, I was close to your recipe. 1 part perlite, 1 part broken up styrofoam peanuts (non degradable) and 1 part oncidium mix to 1 part miracle grow orchid medium.

Close enough. In this case, if it's working for you don't fix it.
