Here in South Florida, where the humidity is high, it is common to see vandas grown without a basket or pot. Some people do just as you described and hang it with a piece of string. More common is an "S" hook, which is just a piece of heavy wire with a hook bent on both ends. The vanda can be tied to the wire. I have also seen pieces of 1"x2" or 2"x2" lumber with a hook attached to one end and the vanda tied to the wood. Vandas require more attention than other orchids because they need to be watered often. I water mine every morning. Good luck.
When the slat basket one is in ages and is ready to go rather then try to use another basket they go on a wire mine are in the greenhouse in Mo . watered daily .Most roots are out of the baskets , not a lot of difference being on a wire ..
I grow mine mediumless under HPS lighting.
In order to keep them from clenching I soak them every day for 15 minutes in a bucket. I also run a humidifier in a small enclosed space all night long to keep them happy.
Works great!

What do you mean by clenching?

hey, I live in the tropics and I grow my vandas without any pot. Right now I've tied them to a wooden post and am waiting on them to attach their roots. So far, some roots have already done so. But all in all, they seem to be doing quite well and happy outside of a pot. I water them every day
All my Vandas are medium less.. Some vandas huge, I heard adding some big chunks of charcoal to the basket does some good, so I added 2 per basket.
Some suggest spraying water twice a day, if weather is too dry and less humid. The second spray should be before 3 PM. I did not try as it is not possible to be at home by that time
