Help-identify this oncidium & suggest care
Default Help-identify this oncidium & suggest care

Hi guys,
I just brought the 2 hanging oncidiums in the below pic yesterday.
Please identify the exact name, and when browsed over the net for care, I did not find any oncidiums that are hanging.

This one seems like oncidium and according to the seller.
Please let me know if it is any other orchid.

And please suggest the care tips.

Your plant probably will not be very identifiable until it blooms. Is this mounted or in a pot hanging up?

that doesn't look like Oncidium alliance to me, tho I'm certainly not an expert. I don't know if you can get id beyond alliance without blooms, tho a guess at a genus may be possible

It looks like some kind of oncidium to me. That impressive root system reminds me of Sphacelatum. It's difficult to tell until it blooms and even then it's often not possible. I grow my oncidiums in coconut husk chips. I let them get dry between waterings but a little more towards the moist side when they're growing fast in the summer. Oncidiums tend to be susceptible to fungus so good air movement certainly helps. Moderate light is good. Brighter than phals but maybe not as bright as cattleyas. Good luck.

the pbulbs and foliage don't look like any Oncidium alliance I have experience with - tho of course I don't have experience with them all - I do have sphacelatum, which doesn't look like this.

I don’t know all of the Oncidium alliance but that doesn’t look like one to me. It could be phal. type Dendrobium but it is hard to say just looking at a picture.

Gee, even if its not a Oncidium I would go along with tucker85's instructions and keep on the moist side when watering from now(spring) through the summer when it will do most of its growing. I will only add that I would fertilize weakly weekly or at least bi-weekly during this same growing season. I really do believe you will end up with a nice blooming plant this way even if it is other than I think it is. AL

I'm pretty sure it is from the oncidium alliance...most likely an intergeneric hybrid of some sort like Beallera. Beallera leaves tend to do that wavey twisty thing like yours. Without flowers that's about as close as I can get. The only other thing that comes to mind is Prosthechea.

Thank you very much for your inputs. I have two of them, hanging. Its difficult to water.. It needs a long spray to make the roots moist. I cannot see the medium as it is surrounded by roots, the seller said me it will have yellow flowers and flowers will arise between leafs.

Thanks for all your inputs, I think I need to wait it until it flowers. I am hanging them along with my vandas and Cattleyas (Guess It gets more light than Cattleya, I will change the place.
And I will fertilize weakly week principle
