The Scent of an Orchid

I know many people who can't have hyacinths or lilies in the house, the scent bothers them so much.
I love a little fragrance, so I'm hoping that my vascostylis [when I get one] won't be too overpowering, as well as the Vanda that I bought recently [vanda arjuna wink] It would be nice to use them as natural room fresheners.

not allergic to to perfumes or cologne...I just dont care for them...too heavy...give me a headache If I have to smell them for too long.

but Bob, a straw in yer nose might give people the impression your looking for the wrong kind of plant

but yes I have too much time and a magnifying glass and even the smallest details of orchids beyond what we initially see with the flower is equally amazing..

The scents are very much aroma therapeutic. Seems to let you feel very in touch with something elusive for a fleeting moment.Then it leaves you with a warm inner glow that soon you return to for more bec it made you feel good and

I embarrass my wife whenever she's with me around orchids because I sniff each one. At a show, whenever I get a whiff, I'll sniff until I see which one on the table I'm smelling.

Most are as RJ said - enchanting and therapeutic, but some are a bit too heavy and cloying, especially up close. Had never thought of isolating which part exuded the odor until RJ described it - and I do have all those straws left over from my youth (many years ago) that aren't getting used.

I can't blame you! For some reason that reminds me of when I was a vendor at a dog show. There was a man who went around sniffing and tasting each dog treat. He was tasting a pizzle at the booth next to us, and the lady said "do you realize that you are tasting a bull penis?

I once bought an orchid off a show table (the vendor is a friend of mine) based on smell alone. I walked around and around that table looking for the perpetrator. It ended up being Prosthechea chacaoensis. It's blooming now.

The scent is indescribable on many. You get hit with that spicy/sweet fragrance from many of the large flowering Catts. I find the spotted bifoliates give off a heady, deep scent.

I love pescatoia dayana, though, it isn't the most prolific bloomer. It's fragrance is wonderful, and not too over powering.

Really interesting observation RJ. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to hunt for the "glands" to check this out for myself this weekend.
