yes, I've heard of them going down to almost freezing with no harm. I came across a website somewhere a while back, where people were trying to test the cold hardiness of orchids, and there was a photo of a vanda covered with snow. They we trying to find out which ones could winter in areas like Florida.
But as you say, cold will greatly slow growth.
