I've had success with 5% Sevin Dust. I sprinkle it over the top of the potting medium and let it sit for an hour or so. Then I lightly water it in so the particles sift through the medium.

Hi!
I wouldn't use sevin for houseplants. Works wonders but it is very toxic. We use it on our fruit trees/grape vines for the yearly Japanese beetle infestation with trepidation and never on anything that will soon be harvested. Try buying some Ant baits and putting those where you see the ants, careful not to get the contents on your plants. I used a combination, Terro and Amdro, to get rid of the ant colony that built nests in my potted citrus plants this past autumn and they were gone pretty quickly. These can be found at Walmart and likely anywhere else. Good luck!

To tell you the truth I can't remember, but I probably got it at Lowe's or HD...maybe even Walmart. It comes in a small orange bag, about 2 lbs. I think. I use it sparingly and have had the same bag for 3 or 4 years. I know it comes in liquid form too, but the liquid doesn't seem to be as effective as the powder.

If you want to avoid commercial pesticides, you can use Boric acid, too.

A mix of sugar, Borax and water, put out where the ants can feed and take it to the rest of the colony, should kill off any that eat it.
