Oh wow, that would be something for me to keep in mind. Perhaps I should elevate it slightly out of the potting medium (sphag area only) so I can keep a better eye on it.

Mmm, I don't know where your 'problem area' is, but mine was right under the base of the phal where the roots are clustered tightly together - if it's the same place on your Onc (ie. under the p/bulbs), or in a place where you could raise it, it probably wouldn't hurt to do so

My apologies, I should have specified that it is in the exact same area as you had an issue with. The area directly under the p-bulb where the roots are amazingly thick.

After a good long soak to soften up the spagh, I use a wood skewer to poke around from both the top and bottom to loosen it up. The skewer point seems to move the roots to the side and limits the damage. It is a tedious task though. I tend not to buy plants in spagh because of what you're going thru.
