Originally it was a lot of answers to common questions, for people to read through, and for people to add more advice as they thought of it. That's what the first few pages are, but later pages are people asking questions.
I agree that people would get better answers if asking on a new thread. As someone who tries to help beginners I find myself getting lost in all the questions asked here so I don't really answer them as well as if they were in their own thread.

Question... should the moderators consider closing this thread to new posts. Most of the information is in the first few pages and if any more were added now it would be lost in all the questions.
If we were to close then new questions would have to be in their own threads.
I won't do that without generally agreement... especially from Philip who started the thread.
