First masdevallia--any tips?
Default First masdevallia--any tips?

Hi Everyone,

I just brought home my first masdevallia. I believe it's a "sunny delight" variety. Any tips to keep it alive and healthy?

Tiffany

Masdevallia Sunny Delight (constricta 'John' HCC/AOS x Monarch 'First Glow') is a man-made hybrid. Masdevallia Monarch 'First Glow' is another man-made hybrid of which I don't know the exact cross, but it definitely has Masdevallia vietchiana in it.

Look up the cross, so you understand its heritage. Therefore you will have an idea of what to expect in terms of temperature range.

Then...

Grow cool to intermediate (55 F - 85 F).

Bright shade to moderate indirect light.

Moderate to high humidity (60% - 80%).

Moderate to good air circulation.

Do not pack the moss in too tightly. Give the roots air.

If you choose to use another potting medium other than moss. Experiment. It should be able to retain quite a bit of water but yet provide enough air to the roots.

I second everything Philip said!
