Did I re-pot at the right depth? Male
Default Did I re-pot at the right depth?

Hello All,

I'm wondering if I re-potted my Oncidium at the right depth in my pot. I was able to take some chunky top pieces of the top of the medium. This is what it looks like without all the chunky medium in the top of the pot.

I heard root-rot is very easy to get and not realize it. so that's why i took the chunky pieces off the top to view the bottom of the plant more. I also noticed this new root coming out of the plant as seen in the pictures I've posted.

Any advice? or does this look good to everybody?

Thanks OB!

P.S.

The darker splotches worried me till i touched one and it came off like dried powder, anything to worry about?

Looks good to me. Just remember that clay pots dry out lots faster than plastic so you'll have to really pay attention to it's watering schedule. You'll know if you aren't watering enough if the new leaves on the new growth accordian pleat on you. The black looks like some kind of fungus or mold. Spritz it with a little rubbing alcohol in that spot.

Does this potting medium happen to have peat in it?

If so, that's not recommended for this type of orchid.

You might get away with it with something like Cyp. acaule (aka Pink Lady's Slipper Orchid) or a plant like Calopogon tuberosus (aka Grass Pink Orchid), but not your Oncidium type orchid.

No, you don't need to throw out the media, just wash out the peat, and use the rest.

Put it through a fine mesh screen or a strainer or something.
