OMG!!!!! This is one of the most vigorous plants I have EVER seen! :O :O :O :O :O I looked this up on the IOR, and this was registered by Bettencourt in 1998 as Phal. Patricia Lillian. You should leave those keikis on, let the mother produce more spikes and keikis, and then get it judged when it is in full bloom! I am sure you will floor the judges! That plant is amazing, and I can't wait to see it in full bloom!

After reading this thread I just did a thorough check of my Phal. equestris for any keikis... not a one :( I do have 2 spikes one of them an old one that keeps popping out new side branches and new blooms... so maybe it will give me a keiki too sooner or later :)

Yes, Nenella, I do plan to leave those 5 keikis on for as long as the mother plant will be able to hold them - hopefully for a very long time. I would love to make it a specimen.

This second flowering is just awesome! Would look good mounted; I've seen it once in a Bot. Garden (Berlin? don't remember, can't leave the bot. gardens out of my way!!), a mount with many generations of over and over flowering keikis of a little phal species(lueddemanniana?), one of those I don't like so much (big leaf and one little flower), but that display was just to fall in love with! Flowers hidiing everywhere, spikes bending, touching 'earth' and rooting, new spikes flowering, a plant, to stay there and look and hear the whole story.
Thats why specimens are so special - they tell history!

This is so wonderful to see! Thank you for posting about your phal, Val. (no rhyme intended--lol).

I've never seen a photo of so many active keiki's on a phal before. Truly amazing. I like how you attached some moss to them earlier, as a means of providing extended moisture exposure. I wonder if you're still doing this, as later photos do not show any moss on the keikis.

One other thing... to see keikis create their own keikis! That's just incredible. :)

Basically if you are letting the mother plant support a keiki, do you need to mist the roots every day? I guess this is the kind of plant you really need to be with frequently. I wonder if the mother plant will continue sprouting keiki's, if it finds that doing so doesn't tax it too much (plenty of periodic moisture and nutrients). Do you use any orchid food supplements when watering?
