Paph sepal color change?
Default Paph sepal color change?

Hi there,

I recently purchased a paph at an orchid show. It's a deep purple color. After it started to open up a few days ago, I noticed that the edges of the upper sepal started to turn white. Is it common for a paph bloom to change color after it has opened up? I haven't encountered this with my phals.

Tiffany

Looks like your first post, Tiffany.... welcome to the family. Pictures are ALWAYS welcome and very helpful when describing a situation. So maybe you could click off a pic or 2 so we might better answer your query, not mention showing off the little beauty!

Thanks for the welcome!

Here are some pictures that will hopefully help. The whole bloom started off as a very deep purple without any color variation. I enjoy that it's becoming multi-colored, but I just want to make sure that the plant is still healthy. Pardon the poor quality of the photos; they are from my iPod

Beautiful plant and welcome. Don't worry about the picture quality - almost any picture is better than a description, and yours are a great quality for the purpose.

I don't grow paphs, but I have seen color change in others - most recently I had a BLC rebloom much redder than I remembered (or pictures). Over the course of a week it lightened up to an orange/red like expected. My V G. Dillon opened with a very disappointing grey cast. It disappeared over about 10 days and developed it's typical color.

Can't say for sure about yopur paph, but if all else is good, appreciate the bloom.

I don't know a great deal about paphs, but the ones I have rebloomed seem to change color a bit as the sepals expand.
And, welcome to OB!

Thanks for the feedback. I've owned a few phals, and they didn't change color. I didn't realize that healty blooms will change color--good information to know.

I have one that just opened its second bloom. It is the same color as the first bloom was when it opened, but the first bloom has faded its color some. Both on the same spike, but slightly different colors. Yours is beautiful and normal.

Fantastic color on that one, Tiffany. On these really dark colored ones, some white shading at the top of the dorsal sepal is very common, and normal. BTW, do you know the name? I might want to look for one.
