Importing a plant from the states
Cool Importing a plant from the states

Hello all, I don't know if this is the correct forum or not but heres the question. If I wanted to import a phal or violeca from the states, what is the process for getting it past customs? Does it take alot of time & effort? What does it add to the total cost of the plant?

Regards, m

would any Canadian growers give me an idea of their experiences with importing? how many plants would make this worthwhile? (yes I know, even one plant can be worth any effort)

The Canadian Orchid Congress website has an excellent section on importing orchids to Canada.

It follows economies of scale, one plant is kinda cost prohibative in terms of permits and shipping, but a dozen plants reduces the cost per plant. The US permits really get you. Our Canadian import permit is $35 and is good for years (multiple shipments).

Its not impossible, but you might want to see if anyone else in Alberta wants to go in with you to reduce the costs. Are you a member of your local orchid club?

Kyle

So, you can export orchids to Canada? We are thinking about moving there in a year or so, from the US, and we're worried about my orchids. We almost don't want to buy anymore if I have to give them all up.

Hi Kyle, I belong to the Foothills Orchid Soc in Calgary & just happened to rejoin after a 5 yr absence when they were placing an order from a place in the states. I ordered a Phalaenopsis violacea & another schilleriana. I have no idea what kind of violacea it will be but am hoping for a blue (which I doubt I will be that lucky). I had thought that if I don't get a blue violacea, then I might be able to order one. We have our annual show in Sept i think so maybe I can get one then. regards m

Hi Puddin, I understand your reluctance to give your chids up but I think you may want to either contact the AOS to see if they cover this sort of thing or a government agency in your area. You may be able to get a cites (not sure if thats the correct acronym) certif to help you over the border. If you do come, let me be the first to say Welcome to Canada!!!!! Do you know where you might be settling? regards m
