What are some species of blue and orange orchids?
Hey OB,
What are some orchids that have Blue or orange flowers? Preferably ones that are good for begginer hobbyist. I want to make room for 1 more orchid, and Blue and Orange are my favorite colors. So I am wondering what are some Orchids I could take a look at for possible consideration.
Thanks all!

Ascocentrum Miniatum, really great orange color, and stays pretty compact in size too.

Some orange orchids I know of that could be considered easy growers:
*Blc Orange Nugget
*Lc Trick or Treat
*Lc. Chit Chat 'Tangerine' (These 3 need lots of light)
*Asconopsis Irene Dobkin ( cross between Phalaenopsis and Ascocentrum)
*A lot of Epidendrum are orange (like Eplc. Volcano Trick)
As for blue, true blue doesn't exist in orchids (unless they're artificially colored). 'Blue' in orchid circles will actually be various shades of purple. So maybe these are not what you are looking for.
Some that I know of:
*Dtps Kenneth Schubert
*Phal violacea (don't know how easy it is for someone new to orchids.)
Dendrobium victoriae-reginae (don't know how easy it is)

There aren't any true blue orchids, as the required pigment(s) are not present in them, but there are "coerulea" varieties of a number of plants.

There are blue orchids, they're not commonly grown, and they're difficult to grow for those who don't have experience with these.
They would be a large majority of the species belonging to the genus Thelymitra. Thelymitra are a group of terrestrial orchids originating from Australia. The difficulty with these is that they grow from root tubers (which rot easily if over watered in general), they have a dormancy period that may be tricky to attend to, and they don't produce a large number of roots. People have been growing Thelymitras for a while now, but they are far-and-few-between.
Cyanicula are also another group of Australian terrestrial orchids that have members that are blue, but again, these are either tough to grow or impossible to grow in cultivation. I have not found a single person who either sells species of Cyanicula or know of anyone who has attempted to grow them.
If these aren't true blue, the following species are as close to blue as orchids get, and they belong to the genus Disa; such as Disa longicornu, Disa maculata, Disa purpurascens, and Disa graminifolia.

Philip - I still believe they don't have the true blue pigment (but I could be wrong). Here's another example of a blue-not blue: Den gonzalesii:
And for orange:
Ascocenda Su Fun Beauty
and Phalaenopsis Baldan's Kaleidoscope

You can find blue Orchids but you have to look HARD! It took forever to find mine. They're more of a baby blue color tho. I really like those orange ones Ray. WOW i must buy....

Dendrobium cuthbersonii is too difficult to grow for a begginer.
I agree with ascosenda, as well as blue vandas. They aren't true blue, but in certain light they come pretty close. It depends on your lighting though, because these plants need quite a bit.
There are some orange Phals out there, as well

Oh, wow! lol, thanks guys! :P unfortunatly I can't find a good Orchid place around my house and cannot make it to any shows anytime soon (no car). Do any of you suggest ordering an orchid offline? and if so, what are some good online shops to take a look at?
