Default Mold or fungus?

What causes a cottony looking fungus to develop on top of the potting mix? Too wet, not enough air?

I know that some have used Thiomyl, Physan 20, regular cinnamon and just any alcohol that happens to be in the cupboard! I use Listerine, but I'm sure you'll find something that works for you.

Thanks to all. I have both the alcohol and listerine. I'll try them while looking for the Physan 20

question... so when I have a skewer inside a phal pot of bark, and I remove it and it has little mold spores on the skewer, is this when I should be applying Physan 20 or listerine, etc?

I have yet to purchase Physan, but I have 97 plants, so I really should just cross that off my list as well
