Mounting depends on your conditions. For me it is hit or miss. I have a Dendrobium anosmum that is happy mounted but some were not happy. Depends how much humidity you have and so on. I wonder if seedlings like your phal need to be more moist than mature plants,

I have a Vanda cerulea I got from Oak Hill that came in coconut fiber [like strings not chopped coconut and I put it in a net pot. seems happy.
