blooming a cut phalaenopsis spike

hiya - so i am just wondering - has anyone ever had to cut a spike in bloom and then placed it in moss? I have one that cut off a dying phal ( it didn't make it too much rot) but the spike was placed into some moss with another phal and the next flower on the spike actually opened. - was wondering if this is normal for cut spikes...hasn't been more than two weeks yet, so not sure what is going to happen long term.

I've never bothered with putting the cut spike in moss but I do use a bud vase with water. The blooms open and last for a couple of months.

Me too, I've only put cut spikes in water, and the blooms last quite a long time. I don't think that the spike can draw up enough moisture if it's in sphag.

I have a tall 'highball' type glass which I fill with water and stand cut spikes in.

I have one just now but it's been open a long time and only one flower left, the plant had root rot (now completelly rootless) when I got it and I wanted to enjoy the flowers without stressing the plant.

One tip I've read is to put 'Sprite' or other fizzy clear lemonade into the water. This last one I used half and half 'Sprite' and water. The sugars act as plant food and the acidity keeps down nasty bacteria growth on the water.
