not a draft but it was -28 last week. (well that was with windchill) do you think having them in the windows during that could have hurt?

Sorry - there's no way to know someones experience level, knowledge, collection size etc unless they say something.
The advice I gave still holds true - give it good culture (make it happy) and they will open in their own time. If you don't wait, then you are trying to force it.
If you have had a bud drop without opening, it could be the sign of something wrong in the culture. It could be anything, but you have to decide if it just isn't ready or if there is something wrong. Things that can cause bud drop include - too wet, too dry, insects, bad medium, root rot, change in conditions (temp & humidity), physical damage (from moving).

I think the sudden temperature drop could have affected the bud development. Since your conditions stay mostly the same, I'd be suspicious of any sudden change.

You also might want to check the roots if you can dig carefully in the moss. A lot of people here suggest to re-pot an orchid right after you buy it. First, it gives you a very clear idea about the state of the roots, and then you'll know exactly how long your plant has been in the media and when to re-pot it again. In case your orchid was in the same moss for a while before you bought it, decomposing media could have affected its root health. If you see that the roots are healthy, then I wouldn't worry about anything else. As long as your plant is healthy, it can develop the rest of the buds properly and produce some additional ones.

you didnt specify about where you got it, so i was just being warry. for me i cant do sphag so that makes me more cautious. it depends on your growing conditions. if your doing well with sphag thats fine. but i might poke around a bit to check.
temps could be the culprit youll just have to wait and see
