How do you get rid of ants?
Default Ants in my orchid in Florida (3)

Hi Dorothy!
Thanks for the info. I am not sure if my orchids belong to the genus Myrmecophila. One is white and the other is pinkish-purple. Each flower has 5 large flat petals. They look like the typical orchid. When I flooded the orchid, I did not see any other insects. I don't want to wage a war against the ants if they are helping my orchid, but I don't want to let them harm my orchid either. After reading the previous pages, I saw that Charles described the splitting of colonies. I think I split the colony because the first ants to leave were carrying what may have been eggs. Pretty scary! I guess I will have to wait to see what happens.
Thanks again,
Marianne

I was just siting how ants are actually benefical to some orchids ..
If you feel infestated by them and they bother you .. by all means look to eradicate them .. I listed a number of natural ways of detering them .. along with other suggestions from other members ..

Keep us posted on what you do and the end results

It sounds like you have a Phalaenopsis .. perhaps you can provide a photo when you get the chance .. if you need guidance as to how to .. I can provide you links to help you out

Well, growing outside in South Florida I see lots of ants! I don't usually care if they are on the plants. They are good for one thing: they will lead you to the scale, aphids and mealies. I do get rid of them if they are forming nests in the pots or if I see them carrying eggs.

I have stumbled upon large colonies in the roots when watering (especially submerging) before. That is very disturbing and I usually just spray the heck out of the roots and pot with Raid right that minute , then go back later and rinse it really well with fresh water. That has never hurt a plant for me.

For regular ant control in and around my house, I always use Terro. Since it is a bait, it will draw the ants to it at first. So I like to put it just outside the house (if I can find where they are coming from). That way I don't have to look at them when they descend on the bait. yeech!

I bought a beautiful chid at a flea market when I was out of town. Little did I know that there wer HUGE black ants living inside the pot When I lifted it up from the table to move it they started running all over the table. I promptly took the pot outside pulled the plant from the pot and hosed it off hosed off all the potting material and repotted it That chid was fine. Kept on blooming. I always repot anyway but just had to do it sooner.

Vinegar is bad for plants. I use it to spot spray weeds to kill them.
