Last blossom fell from my odontoglossum/oncidium, now what?
Question Last blossom fell from my odontoglossum/oncidium, now what?

Received as a gift appx 6-8 weeks ago and was already fully bloomed. The plant seems to be in great health, all the leaves are green and only slightly droopy (I've read that is normal?) the main stem has appx 10 branches coming off of it, which each had appx 4-5 blossoms. All the blossoms have finally wilted and fallen off. I read that I should trim back the main stem, but I don't know how far down. I just really want to make sure I can keep this plant for many years and want to do it right from square one!!
Also, the base of the plant has about 4 bulbs, 2 of which are rather large. The pot has a diameter of about 4". And the height of the main stem (the one I think I'm supposed to trims back) reaches appx 3.5'. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Most oncidiums do not rebloom, so yeah, you can cut the dead stalk off. I usually cut it close, but not at it's terminal point. For added measure, you can seal the cut point so no infection can get into the plant from that point.

I use a new straight razor for the cut. Then I put a small drop of Elmers glue in my left palm. To this I add a dash of ground cinnamon. I mix it with my right hand pointer finger and apply to the cut. Then just rinse the excess cin/glue away off my hands.

What is the medium it is growing in? I have found a lot of commercial growers use cheap material that breaks down quickly and leads to root rot. So now, whenever I get a new plant, I ALWAYS repot it in medium I find good for my growing conditions.
