Why a NoID is a NoID.

Just bought another NOID , could not help myself. Looks a lot like a DPTS with dark pink stripes and white background. I have a named variety very similar and it blooms reliably.

I don't know if I got this information right but u can bloom an orchid to death by letting it keep blooming without a rest.

Some just want to keep blooming- I have a couple of NOIDs that just want to keep going. I have one that was purchased in bloom back in late February that has yet to have a bloom fade. I have another one that has had new growth form on the ends of spikes already in bloom and bloom even more. I finally gave up waiting for the first one to stop blooming and repotted it while still in bloom. That was a couple weeks ago- still going strong.

I swear some of these NOIDs have a mind of their own.

Some just want to keep blooming, and that's fine. If it wants to and is healthy enough to, then let it.

The problem comes when you force blooming. This is done by cutting the spike in a certain way after blooming to force a side spike to grow. This can force it to produce a side spike and flower again even if it doesn't have the strength, and if done again and again can cause it to bloom it's self to death.

If you either leave the spike to do it's own thing without cutting it, or if you cut it right down after flowering, then you won't have this problem.

Wouldn't it be great if at Orchid Shows there was a separate place and defined time for a panel of experts to look at No I Ds and hazard a guess at the species or even a finer definition!

Is there any way to test the orchid to find out what species or heat ever it is? I'm not going to enter any in a show or anything, just interested to know. I have about 7 Phaleanopsis orchids, one is a tiny Keiki that grew off one of the first orchids I bought, all different colors and sizes.

Interesting question. I'm not sure. I think there might be genetic tests, not sure how good they are on complex hybrids though.

I don't think it's something people usually do, it's something horticultural researchers might do rather then the general public (I think).

Many hybrids are EXTREMELY complex - Even if genetic testing were available, I doubt it would be much help.

There's even debate over some species varities, whether ir not they may be unique, distinct species on their own.
