Wow, I just want to say that I am glad this post is a sticky because I just learned SOOOO much about NoID's. Who knew Orchids were so much like dogs in the way they were judged, lol! I'm just kidding, but seriously, i just learned so much. I wouldn't have thought about looking for a NoID thread to read.
Very glad I found this thread.

I am glad you enjoyed this thread, Ducky. One of the reasons I made this is so that people can learn the true meaning behind the term 'NoID' and like what was mentioned, a chain of missnamed orchids.

I'm a newbie to Orchids. I love Phals and have 16 of them in different colours......all bought from superstores...!!. I had no idea that I couldn't find thier names so now I shall have fun giving them names of my own :-) Thankyou for this thread it was really enlightening. I have Orchids as my breathing is so bad I cannot have pets...sigh. I talk to my 'girls' and they reward me by being in flower for most of the year. Currently my older girls have been in flower since Christmas and now it's nearly May and they show no sign of going over.
I'm in the UK and keep my girls in a conservatory that is East facing...........
Thanks guys, most of my newbie queries have been answered reading through the various threads on this board.
Still don't know what I can use instead of Physan though as it is banned in the UK.

Welcome to Orchid Board Khanarabians. I'm not sure what can be used instead of Physan either. Luckily I've not needed it yet

But what if...
It has a name on it and it is from a known orchid grower near by? Just curious because most of the stores in my city-including walmart- buy from this company. Also what info should be on it's tag?

If it has a name that is good. Some names are 'trade names' though and are still NoID's unless the grower can confirm the true name behind the trade name.
What is the name on your tag. Someone should be able to look it up to see if it's a registered one.
It's difficult to say what info should be on the tag. Basically it should be the genus name and the species name, or the genus and grex for a hybrid. But how can you tell that is what is there? I've been fooled before by ones that seemed to have a good name, but it turned out to just be a trade name and have no real meaning. So the only way really to tell is to look it up on the web before buying and check the plant/flowers look right for what the pictures on the web show. Unless you have a web enabled phone it's not really easy to tell until you get home

I find this whole naming issue fascinating. So is it that the rising popularity of orchids has caused a flourishing of so many growers that don't take care to keep their varieties pure? That they end up creating all kinds of hybrids without even realizing it?
I see that we have certain species names like Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium, Cattleya, Encyclia, etc. Is it a common occurrence to find an orchid that is a hybrid, whereas the primary characteristics can fall into a known sub species but that it has other characteristics indicative of another species? Is it generally safe to say that the care and behavior of the primary species identified will generally apply to those hybrids?

I have one of these. The tag says, Phalaenopsis 'Black Glamour' but since I couldn't find any similar Phals with the same trade name It's a Noid (but of course it's still as gorgeous as a Hasid ).
