Vanda Joaquim not growing
Default Vanda Joaquim not growing

I had planted an Vanda Joaquim about 3 years ago in a charcoal and coco chips medium. I spray water on the plant almost every day once in the morning. However the growth of this plant seem to be extremely slow. It has grown only about 7 to 8 inches in these three years. This plant is located in a shaded area without direct sunlight.
Of late this plant seem to be drying its leafs and there are dry spots appearing on this.
I've attached some pictures. Any help in salvaging the plant is highly appriciated.
Thanks.
KR.

They grow in moderate indirect bright light, like for Oncidiums.

Yes, they grow extremely slow.

Is it perhaps over potted? They really like to dry out quickly, and that looks like a large pot. They are better in a basket, or put some holes in the pot for better air circulation.

Roots are too dry. You can mount these onto a piece of log btw.

I did that with my Papilionanthe pedunculatum (the Vanda Miss Joaquim is a Papilionanthe hybrid - Papilionanthe teres x Papilionanthe hookeriana).

It won't be easy to mount it onto a log, but it's worth it!

Hello and welcome to OB!

I disagree. I think it needs closer to full sun and a lot more water. Potted will be the easiest way to grow this one since it should not dry out.

Many people grow them in a basket with no moss etc. I think they would dry out too much that way. Mine has some sphagnum and charcoal, and gets watered once a week in the winter, every third day in summer, with misting in between. It does extremly well this way, and no root rot.

I own one of the parents (Papilionanthe hookeriana) as well, it burned under conditions closer to full sun.

Vanda teres is found as an epiphyte and occasionally a terrestrial.

Vanda hookeriana is an epiphyte of swamp plants. It is literally growing in the middle of a swamp amongst 6 ft tall leafy swamp plants.

These are not my photos, they're just links to someone else's Flickr photos. This person has tons of them.

Mine is a diffent kind, but full morning sun should be fine, I would think. Mine only shows a little burning if it is in full afternoon sun during the summer. In the winter I give it a southern exposure as much as posible, which helps it to bloom often.

Don't have this Vanda myself, but did a search for "Joaquim" here on Orchidboard. Came up with 22 pages of threads. Many of the threads refer to the conditions people were actually growing this orchid in. I didn't open every one, but most of the ones I did sounded like typical Vanda culture - open basket in very bright light (up to full sun). Probably a good idea to dig deeper into the threads than I did, but first impression is brighter than shade. Depending on where you are in India, full sun might be too strong, but I would start acclimating it to brighter light and see what it takes,
