If you DO cut the spike back after removing the keiki, be sure to sterilize your tool, or use a sterile single edged blade, and sprinkle cinnamon on the cut. I personally don't cut spikes until they turn brown and die back. When you wait until then to cut it the advantage is that there is less risk of bacteria or virus getting back into the plant.
