Send a phalaenopsis to a friend in Oz
Hi there,
I have a friend who lives in Darwin Australia at the moment she is from the uk and easter two years ago she sent me a phalaenopsis as a gift this was my first orchid and it doing very well.
It's her birthday at the start of feb and i would like to send her a Phal, is it best to order one from the uk or can you order one from a florist where she lives?
Have any of the OB members done this?
I wonder if you can get phalaenopsis as early as feb in Darwin?

The best would be to order from someplace in australia and have them send it to her. And don't worry, you can find Phals (and alot of other orchids) year round!
Shipping an orchid to her from the UK will be extremely difficult and expensive. Anytime you want to ship from one country to an other (except in EU) you will need a CITES document, phyto certificate, and possibly import/export permits. IMO, it's not worth the headache, and the plant has to survive the long trip.

Look for a grower in OZ who also ships. Have the grower ship the plant to your friend. This should be able to be accomplished over the web.

I agree, we have some members from Oz so it may be worth asking them for nursaries they recomend.

Hi en3rmax, I'd be really interested if you find a good place to buy from over there - Around Christmas, I was looking into buying an orchid for my best friend who lives in Perth (WA) and found a few web-sites with native Australian orchids that I could use, but I didn't go through with it as I didn't know what sort of quality the plants would be.
Also, if there are any Australian OB people reading this, does anyone have experience of, saying, buying from an eastern vendor and having it shipped to the west coast?

I've sent a few emails to some places in Darwin one is Majestic Orchids it's a orchid farm as Darwin is the orchid capital of Australia.
Majestic Orchids said they only do bare rooted orchids, i would need one in a pot really for her as a gift.
Oh btw she lives in Nightcliff, if any one on OB has any info on orchids in this area join in on the thread.

I'll go back through my bookbarked threads, back in december an australian member gave me names of nurseries there (that mainly do flasks since I was looking for places to import from). I'd bet they also do plants as well, I'll look and give tell you the ones that do.

Nevermind, all those growers specialize in Aussie natives (which was what I was interested in)

Hi en3rmax,
Majestic is a cut flower farm, not a nursery. Looking at what they sell and their prices I'd suggest looking elsewhere. The northern territory is a fairly small spot on the Australian orchid map. For Phalaenopsis, you'd be much better off buying plants form Queensland or New South Wales and getting them sent over. The AOC and the BOS websites have lists of vendors you should be able to buy from:
AOC Nurseries pg 1
AOC Nurseries pg 2
BOS Nurseries
A lot of nurseries send plants bare root. However, they may be willing to send the plants in the pot if you're willing to pay extra for postage.

Plants sent to Western Australia need to meet (and pay for) WA Quarantine's import requirements. You need to check with the nursery in question as to whether they'll ship to WA as some will and others won't.
