Default Indoor orchid growing

I recently found this board after getting sucked into orchid growing and just had a couple questions about indoor lighting. I am considering buying a T5 light fixture probably only a two bulb 24". Now reading through posts i saw that you need different color spectrum for vegetative growth and then flowering. Would a T5 Hydrofarm structure cover all the necessary spectrum for a 6-8 orchid garden of mostly Phals with a couple Paphs. or would I need to maybe add another CFL? Also, so CF and temperature would be the most important factors in buying a lighting fixture not necessary the wattage provided. is this right?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Pete

Welcome to the Orchidboard, Pete.

Yes, it's true that chlorophyll absorbs light primarily in two regions of the spectrum, but pretty much all horticultural fluorescents emit in those regions. The color temperature is a bit of a descriptor of the relative intensities, however.

Some prefer bulbs with color temperature around 5500°K, as that replicates midday sun pretty well, with roughly a 50/50 balance in intensity of the two regions. I recommend the roughly 6500°K bulbs, though:
  1. Chlorophyll absorbs more in the blue end than red end of the spectrum.
  2. the blue:red intensity ratio is equivalent to a clear summer day with direct sun, plus backscatter from the atmosphere adding a bit more blue.
  3. Not only does the 6500°K bulb match the chlorophyll absorption better, but it emits with about 50% more energy flux.
As a discount reseller of Hydrofarm products, I sell a lot of their T5 fixtures. A 2-bulb, 2-foot fixture will provide sufficient light for phals occupying and area about 3 feet long by about 18"-24" wide. I'd put the paphs in the middle.

Welcome to OB!

Only comment is that even though the 2 foot fixture will do for now, it's cheaper to go 4 ft recognizing that you will probably need it eventually.

Yes I did actually consider the same thing. A four foot fixture would get put to use in the future. How about the hydrofarm four bulb two foot structure? How much space could that fixture potentially cover? Thanks again for the help!

Yep, 4 footers are the way to go for sure. I will also second Ray's recommendation of the 6500K bulbs. That's all I use and my plants are growing very well, and I have had no trouble blooming any of them. Even the high light Catts and Dens.

In Canada the 2 foot T5 fixtures are nearly as expensive as the 4 foot ones. So I expect pricing would be similar in the U.S. Might as well get more bang for your buck.
