it's likely that the new mix simply dried out faster because it was "new" - new bark will dry faster that older bark. It's also helpful to soak the new media from overnight to longer before potting the plant in it - tho it still will require more frequent water for a while.

Camille, Wow! Thank you for finding those threads for me. I searched but didn't look under water rescue.
Someone mentioned the water has "dilute fertilizer which has algae growing on it."
What exactly is that? I don't think I ever say orchid fertilizer that had algae growing in there. Am I thinking wrong? I want to try this so if there is a recipe for the water, please let me know. Thanks again!

Algae is going to grow in the water no matter what. I'm guessing that the person meant that they use fertilized water that has algae growing in it. To be on the safe side I had diluted the fertilizer even further than what I usually use on my orchids. Unfortunately while my Den did make a great comeback during its 2 months in water (4 new canes with lots of roots) and it established itself in a pot well, I lost the plant to rot a few months later.

I actually had these threads these bookmarked ( I have a file where I list all my favorite reference threads) so they were quite easy to pull up once I had time to do it!

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me. I am eager to try this to see if I can save this catt. I will also look into book marking threads. I am sorry to hear about the rot a few months later.
That is very sad.
Thanks again for all your help.

Don't know if 'bookmark' is the right term. I simply have a Word file when I paste the link to threads that I feel are worth having easy access too.

I have read about the water method, and some people grow orchids in just water with a little fertilizer. This seems strange, considering that they need good drainage. I have a sick cat in water right now. It's only been a week, so I don't know yet if it is working.
