I tried a few plants and lost half of them due to rot. The mix stays too wet here. Unfortunately, a friend of mine was sold on this mix and repotted about 200 catts and he lost quite a few of them. I felt sorry for him and helped him repot most of them...what a mess!!

The "learning points" from this thread are not at all specific to Aussie Gold. Instead, it's related to understanding the interrelationship between:
  1. The needs of the plant,
  2. The conditions you grow in,
  3. Your watering habits, and
  4. The properties of the medium.
I'm sure that for some, Aussie Gold is spectacular. H&R grows almost everything in something similar, and nobody's going to tell me their plants aren't grown very well. Move them into my conditions in Pennsylvania and they will suffocate and rot in no time.

I THINK I know who you are talking about.

Ray brings up some good points. Other things to consider also is what the person recommending the product has vested in the product and how long they have been using it as well.

I have been using aussie gold for a few years now and I love it, I live in SoCal we don't have as much humididty and I only water twice a week. The white stuff sounds similar to white mildew that I sometimes get on my roses if I water them at night.
