What I would do is cut the leaf higher up. Then tear the remains down the center and gently pull and tear away the base of the leaf from the rest of the plant.

I would avoid using anything sharp down there because you don't want to damage the root or the body of the plant.

I have found that the base of phal leaves (arround where it's black/yellow on yours) is wrapped arround the center. The root will go through a small hole in it and be joined further in, so you can rip the leaf down towards the hole the root goes through and pull the pieces away from the root.

It's difficult to describe but hopefully you will see what I mean.

Note I only do this when I'm worried about something on a leaf spreading. Usually I let them do their own thing.

Also if you do pull it away then I would dab cinammon on the edge that is left.

Is this the start of crown rot on my Phal? Male

It has not gotten any bigger these last two days so I hopefully won't have to take that leaf off as it is still healthy and turgid. Thank you guys for all your help!
