Keike in trouble
Default Keike in trouble

everyone,
I am new to the orchid world, but have been an admirer for many years. After recieveing one as a gift, I am hooked! My problem at this time is I moved my plant and a large keike with roots that was attached onto a main stem got knocked off. I was told recently that I could repot this new growth by cutting it down an inch or so on the main stem. I do not know if this growth will live if I repot it, but that is what I did in bark and spagnum moss. The new growth has 3 large leaves and is at least 4 to 5 inches tall with lots of roots. I have been worried about it and needed some advice. I believe this is a Dendrobium orchid, is in bloom with small green flowers with purple centers. Thank you so much for your help...in advance. Jocee

Would love to help, but if you have already repotted it, what is your question? Sounds like it is doing fine.

Keike in trouble
Default Keike problem

It just happened today and I was just looking for feedback about its chances of survival. I decided to go ahead and plant the Keike in bark & spag, with the hopes that having its own roots it would survive okay. Unsure if I should use other media for such a planting as well. Jocee

You should be fine, just don't let it totally dry out.

Sounds lke it will be ok, roots usually need to be 2 1/2 to 3 inches long before removing from the mother plant. Watch your water as it will need to settle in for a week or so, then water lightly. Welcome to the Orchid Board. Hope you make lots of posts.
