I've never tried talking them down like you did, but I went through a phase where I would mark the underside of a pot I was interested in at Lowes, knowing it would be fifty percent off in a week or two when the blooms dropped.
Unfortunately, the local Lowes overwaters their orchids badly (plus they're tightly overpacked in sphag). Too many were too badly root rotted and even though I salvaged most, the time and effort proved not to be worth the discount to me.
Now I always pull some of the sphag out to check the roots before I buy, and try to only buy fresh deliveries.
