Looking for strongly scented intermediate orchids. Male
Question Looking for strongly scented intermediate orchids.

I would really love to gift a strongly scented orchid to my parents for Christmas and it has to be intermediate to cool conditions but I can't find any for sale.

I'm not the best to answer this question, but I can give it a try.

-- Oncidium Sharry Baby has a chocolate scent and is an intermediate grower, though I don't think they like to be cooler than 55 F.
-- Another one might be Miltoniopsis - any variety. These have lovely "pansy" flowers that are said to have a lovely scent. They do not like to get hotter than 75-80 F and can get as cool as 55 F.
-- Burrageara Nelly Isler is another excellent option. I have one and the scent is strongest in mid-afternoon. I grow mine closer to the warm side of intermediate, but I think they probably prefer to be a little cooler. Cultural information I've read indicates nighttime lows of 55 F and daytime highs of 80 F.

This list should get you started, but I'm sure more experienced growers will chime in with some ideas.

Good luck!

Cattleya mossiae can handle the cooler conditions very well and is an intermediate grower.

I was going to say; any of the Cattleyas would fit that bill as long as they get bright light.

If you can find an Oncidium Twinkle, they stay very compact, and have sprays of white or red flowers that to many people smell like vanilla (to me, spicy vanilla). Very hardy, forgiving plants. And can definitely grow (if not prefer) in intermediate temperatures.

My Onc Sharry Baby definitely takes temps cooler than 55. Den kingianum -mine isn't super strongly scented, tho the Den x delactum I had for a bit sure was, and should like the same conditions. Many Zygos and hybrids of.

Following on from Izzie, you can get Onc Twinkle from EasyOrchids (Orange, yellow or pink: https://www.easyorchids.co.uk/shop/O...ts_per_page=50) but they're not shipping until the weather get warmer over here.

Another lovely one is Coelogyne ochracea/ nitida. It's cool growing and compact. I got mine from Burnham Nuseries (Coelogyne ochracea - Detailed item view - For everything you need to grow your orchids). This year, for example, it had 6 flowers and the gorgeous scent filled an entire room.
