I'd only grow north window if you have some direct sunlight. My north window is a large one. I put plants already in bloom there though. I have managed to bloom a hybrid catt though

I have a couple of phals in a north window that do fairly well because during the winter, with the snow on the ground, and my next door neighbors white colonial next to mine we get a lot of reflection. I have gotten light meter readings of a tad over 1000 foot candles.

Same, I'd only put orchids in a north window if in have even a little bit of direct sun. In the netherlands I have north (slightly east) window that gets a few hours of sunlight only from april to october. The rest of the year I have extra lights above the orchids. I've bloomed Phals and Oncs OK there, the rest of them depend on the sunny summer home in France to be able to bloom.
