Swollen black Roots?
Default Swollen black Roots?

I bought my Orchid about 4 months ago when it was in bad shape for $4 at a grocery store. im happy to say after caring for it for a bit,its looking good, it even sprouted a new bud!! but it doesnt seem to want to bloom, and the bud hasnt gotten any bigger either?
So my first question is, how long does a bud take to bloom? (its been around a month or so)
Secondly, recently some of its roots have started swelling at the base and turning black... almost like it has a type of root rot? (i know nothing about orchids if you cant tell)
I tried cutting one of these "black" roots off and a new one has sprouted in its place. it even spurred new root growths on other roots. So should i cut the one other black root off?
Also, should i fertilize it? I read somewhere your supposed to it weekly?
here is a picture of what its flowers look like (could someone tell me the species possibly?)

It's a phalaenopsis orchid. You probably won't get a more specific ID as they are so mass produced. I agree that a picture would help with your root problem.

NOID Phal hybrid. No further correct or precise ID is possible.

Most of them are mass produced in places like Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, and Malaysia, then shipped all over the world. A few places in the US still do their own breeding.

Pics of roots, before any more root surgery, please!

Default Looks familiar

Hi,
I am including one of my two orchids that looks sneakingly familiar to yours. I also bought my 2 for about $10 each at a store. They both had been blooming since April. About several weeks ago, this one ended its blooming stage. I then repot it because I was concerned about the roots. To my astonishment, over the last 2-3 weeks, it started to bud again. Looks like maybe about 6 blooms this time.
The tag on the plants just said "phalaenopsis" without any more detailed specific name. I used Phalaenopsis #2 for the medium and use Schultz's orchid fertilizer 1 -2 times a month. Hope some of this info helps.

Lol, I nearly bought a similar one at the supermarket the other day!
As for the roots, pics would be best! But it does happen that the exposed roots at the surface of the pot turn brown/black all while remaining otherwise healthy. Since you're grew a new root there, it was probably still a good root. The general rule of thumb is that anything which is firm is good. If it's mushy it goes. Waiting for your pics!
